Taking Responsibility Around Internet Access Is Not Spying. Parents may sometimes feel that installing parental control software on a computer their children use to access the internet is intrusive. They may feel that having to purchase software that records everything typed on the computer, as well as recording screen shots of internet sites visited is spying.
As a parent, you are responsible for your child’s safety. Many parents now drop and fetch their children from school, because there is the perception that it is no longer safe for them to walk to school. Yet parents are happy to let their children use the internet without any form of protection at all.
The perception that it is not safe for children to walk to school is somewhat unfounded, and in some circumstances, overkill. However, the dangers of unmonitored internet access for children is well documented and the results are in our papers monthly.
The dangers of unmonitored internet access are so serious, reputable companies are now offering software to manage internet access for free. Parental Control software is a minimum on any computer used by children to access the internet.
Products out there that go further, such as recording what is being typed and saving pages visited have the ability to email such information to the parent, based on the setup. This is not spying, but rather taking the interests of the child seriously. Children need to be guided between what is safe and what is not. For a child, privacy is right a right, it is a reward that needs to be learnt.
